Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group closed out its latest share buyback program having used up all of the cash its board budgeted, while leaving room on the number of shares it was allowed to buy. A monthly status report submitted to the Kanto Local Finance Bureau under Article 24-6, Paragraph 1 of Japan's Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, and disclosed via the EDINET filing system, shows the bank's cumulative repurchases through July 31, 2026 reached 28,018,600 shares for ¥179,999,535,300, which the filing itself records as 100.0% of the ¥180bn ceiling its board approved, but only 70.0% of the 40,000,000-share cap set alongside it.
The board authorized the program on May 13, 2026, covering purchases from May 14 through July 31 under a discretionary trading agreement that limited execution to market buying. In July alone, the bank's final month of the window, it bought back 10,403,700 shares for ¥71,486,434,000, with daily purchases running between roughly 439,000 and 600,000 shares.
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Authorized share cap | 40,000,000 shares |
| Authorized yen cap | ¥180.0bn |
| July 2026 shares repurchased | 10,403,700 shares |
| July 2026 value spent | ¥71.49bn |
| Cumulative shares repurchased (as of Jul 31) | 28,018,600 shares (70.0% of cap) |
| Cumulative value spent (as of Jul 31) | ¥179,999,535,300 (100.0% of cap) |
| Total issued shares (as of Jul 31) | 3,829,143,493 shares |
| Treasury shares held (as of Jul 31) | 37,211,699 shares |
Hitting a yen ceiling before a share-count ceiling is simple arithmetic: the money ran out before the quota did. A buyback authorized as "up to 40 million shares or ¥180bn, whichever comes first" will stop early on the share count only if the stock trades cheap enough during the window; here the reverse happened, and the cash limit bound first. The filing does not state a per-share average price, and none should be inferred beyond what it discloses.
The filing does not disclose whether SMFG's board will authorize a follow-on buyback program now that the ¥180bn window has closed. It does, however, confirm the bank's position at the end of July: 3,829,143,493 shares outstanding and 37,211,699 shares held in treasury, a figure that includes odd-lot shares bought back from shareholders exercising buyback requests.
