Tokyo Brief
Editorial Standards
How Tokyo Brief is sourced, written, corrected, owned and funded.
Publishing Principles
Tokyo Brief covers what Japan's regulators, ministries, exchanges, and listed companies actually disclose. Every brief starts from a primary document and reports what that document establishes.
The desk works to a fixed set of rules.
- Figures carry their qualifiers — the reporting period, the basis, the currency, and any conditions attached to them.
- Proposals, forecasts, and completed actions are labelled as what they are, and never blended together.
- Reported facts are kept separate from the implications drawn from them.
- Where a document is ambiguous, the brief says so rather than resolving the ambiguity silently.
Tokyo Brief does not publish market rumour, unattributed tips, or aggregation of other outlets' reporting. Sources held for research only are barred from published copy, both by policy and by the systems that assemble each issue.
Our Sources
Every Tokyo Brief article originates in a primary document: company filings, exchange disclosures including TDnet, ministry announcements, regulatory notices, and official statistics.
Each article links to the documents it relies on, including archived copies, so any reader can check the brief against the record.
Every article is bound to an immutable evidence record listing the exact documents it was built from. That record cannot be altered after publication.
Tokyo Brief does not use unnamed sources. Every claim traces to a named, publicly available document linked from the article.
Our Byline
All Tokyo Brief coverage carries a single byline: Tokyo Brief Desk.
The brief is the product of a defined editorial process rather than individual reporting, and attributing it to a named writer would misrepresent how it is made. The desk byline is the accurate attribution.
Responsibility is not diffused by this. Rob Moore holds final editorial responsibility for everything published under the Tokyo Brief Desk byline.
Ethics and Independence
Tokyo Brief is independent of the organisations it covers.
No one with editorial or approval authority at Tokyo Brief holds positions in the securities Tokyo Brief covers.
Tokyo Brief accepts no paid placement, no sponsored coverage, and no payment of any kind in exchange for coverage or for the way a story is framed.
No advertiser, partner, or commercial relationship has any influence on what Tokyo Brief covers or how it is written. No source organisation, investor-relations firm, or public-relations agency has input into coverage before publication.
Tokyo Brief publishes from the public record only. It does not publish on the basis of non-public information, and it does not publish ahead of a document's official disclosure timestamp.
Should Tokyo Brief ever carry commercial content, it will be labelled as such and kept visually distinct from editorial.
Corrections
The record is permanent. A Tokyo Brief URL never changes after publication. Articles are corrected, never deleted, and there is no facility for the desk to unpublish or withdraw a published article. Where an issuer withdraws the underlying filing, or a source temporarily holds it, the article stays published at the same URL and carries a notice saying so.
To report an error, email [email protected] with the article link, the passage in question, and the source material that supports the correction. The desk acknowledges every error report within one business day, and resolves it or explains within three.
Corrections are handled by type.
- Correction — a factual error. A dated note is added to the article stating what the earlier version said and what is now correct.
- Clarification — accurate, but liable to mislead. A dated note is added and handled the same way.
- Update — a new development in a continuing story. A dated note is added and labelled an update, so it is not read as a correction.
- Minor fix — typography, formatting, or a broken link. Corrected without a note.
Correction, clarification, and update notes are permanent. They are never removed.
Every article shows its publication date, which never changes. Where an article has been corrected, clarified, or updated, the note carries the date of that change.
Correcting an article never alters the immutable evidence record of the documents that article was originally built from.
If a correction is not resolved to your satisfaction, Rob Moore holds final editorial responsibility for everything Tokyo Brief publishes and can be reached at [email protected].
