Mitsubishi Corporation authorizes buyback of up to ¥1tn through July 2027

Mitsubishi Corporation's board authorized market purchases of up to ¥1tn or 420 million shares between 5 November 2026 and 31 July 2027, with all repurchased shares to be cancelled on 31 August 2027.

Mitsubishi Corporation's board resolved on 4 November 2026 to buy back up to ¥1tn of its own common stock, and to cancel every share it acquires under the programme. The company announced the decision in a notice on share repurchase and cancellation.

The terms

The authorization carries two ceilings: a total purchase price of up to ¥1tn and up to 420,000,000 shares. Purchases are to be made on the Tokyo Stock Exchange as market purchases between 5 November 2026 and 31 July 2027.

A footnote to the notice says that, assuming purchases at the 2 November 2026 closing price, the total number of shares bought on the market would equal about 6% of issued shares excluding treasury stock. The company's holdings at 30 September 2026 were 3,663,358,124 shares outstanding excluding treasury stock, and 47,170,618 treasury shares. The treasury figure includes shares held by the officer-compensation BIP trust and the stock-grant ESOP trust.

Cancellation and rationale

The company plans to cancel all of the shares acquired under the programme on 31 August 2027, a month after the purchase window closes.

Mitsubishi Corporation says the buyback follows the shareholder-return and cash-flow allocation approach in its Corporate Strategy 2027, as set out in the second-quarter results it published the same day, and aims to improve capital efficiency. It adds that it will keep considering disciplined investment in growth strategy while maintaining financial soundness.

Ceiling, not execution

Both the ¥1tn and the 420 million shares are upper limits. The notice does not say how quickly the company will buy, and it gives no purchase total to date. The 6% figure rests on the notice's own pricing assumption and is not a forecast of what will be bought.
