Nxera Pharma has turned a wide 2026 forecast range into a single number, and the number is the top of the old range. The Tokyo-listed drug developer said its UK subsidiary, Nxera Pharma UK Ltd, signed an exclusive global licence with AbbVie Inc. for NXE0033744, an oral EP4 receptor agonist in development for inflammatory bowel disease. The same-day guidance revision sets revenue at ¥48.8bn, core operating profit at ¥22.8bn and operating profit at ¥15.7bn.
What is committed and what is not
Nxera will receive $100mn upfront, which the company converts at ¥157.80 to the dollar, or about ¥15.8bn. It also has the right to development and sales milestones of up to $1.37bn, plus tiered royalties on sales. The milestone figure is a ceiling, not guaranteed consideration, and the notice gives no royalty rates or milestone triggers.
Under the licence, AbbVie takes exclusive worldwide development and commercial rights to NXE0033744 for inflammatory bowel disease. The deal covers Nxera's wider EP4 agonist programme.
How the forecast moved
The previous guidance, issued on 13 February 2026, gave ranges: revenue of ¥33.8bn to ¥48.8bn, core operating profit of ¥7.8bn to ¥22.8bn and operating profit of ¥0.7bn to ¥15.7bn. Nxera said the top of each range had approximately included an upfront payment from a significant new partnership. The new forecast replaces the ranges with the upper-end figures, using the actual payment and the assumed exchange rate.
| Measure | Previous range (13 Feb) | Revised |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 33,800 to 48,800 | 48,800 |
| Core operating profit | 7,800 to 22,800 | 22,800 |
| Operating profit | 700 to 15,700 | 15,700 |
The revised revenue figure compares with ¥29.6bn in 2025, when Nxera reported a core operating loss of ¥352mn and an operating loss of ¥8.5bn.
The conditions
The transaction is subject to customary antitrust clearances, including under the US Hart-Scott-Rodino Act. Nxera expects to book the $100mn as fourth-quarter revenue if the deal closes by 31 December 2026 and if its auditor agrees to the accounting treatment. The forecast rests on both assumptions. Nxera said it will announce promptly any material change to them.
The asset is still a clinical candidate, not an approved treatment. Nxera said a phase 1 trial, including a cohort of ulcerative colitis patients, was completed and supported gut-selective activity and target engagement, with no adverse events of concern reported. The company describes the drug as potentially first-in-class.
Nxera's chief executive said the upfront payment and potential near-term milestones would strengthen the company's financial base. AbbVie is already a partner of Nxera in a neurology discovery collaboration.
