JR West pays ¥90bn for 20% of Kansai Mirai Bank, with a banking service conditional on a license

JR West now holds 20.0% of Kansai Mirai Bank after paying Resona ¥90bn, while the bank stays a Resona subsidiary; a banking service targeted for around spring 2027 depends on a banking-agent license.

West Japan Railway Company (JR West) completed its purchase of a 20.0% voting stake in Kansai Mirai Bank from Resona Holdings on October 1, 2026, paying ¥90bn for 20,000,000 shares. JR West held no shares before the transfer.

What the stake does and does not change

The three companies, JR West, Resona and Kansai Mirai Bank, said the transfer closed after JR West completed the approval procedure to become a major bank shareholder and after the agreed preconditions were met. Kansai Mirai Bank becomes an equity-method affiliate of JR West. It remains a consolidated subsidiary of Resona, so JR West has not taken control.

The transfer follows a capital and business alliance agreement announced on May 1, 2026, under which JR West invests in the bank to push regional economic projects.

A banking service with a condition attached

The more consequential change is timing. The companies had first planned to launch a new banking service during the fiscal year 2027. They now aim to start around spring 2027. That target depends on JR West obtaining a banking-agent license with Kansai Mirai Bank as its principal bank. The notice gives no date for the license decision.

The service sits inside what the companies call a regionally circulating BaaS and payment model linking mobility, daily life and finance. They say other alliance measures will be rolled out in stages before the banking service starts, and that they are also considering further improvements to the payment experience and to quality of life along the rail lines, starting from town development.

Financial effect still unquantified

The companies say they expect the alliance to lift all three companies' results over the medium to long term. They are still reviewing the specific impact and will disclose anything required promptly.
