Court dismisses suit seeking permanent shutdown of Chubu Electric's Hamaoka units 3 to 5

A Shizuoka court has rejected the claims of 34 residents who sued in 2011 to end operations at Hamaoka units 3 to 5, and Chubu Electric says the ruling does not affect its results.

The Shizuoka District Court on 27 October 2026 dismissed the claims of plaintiffs who sought to end operations at units 3 to 5 of Chubu Electric Power's Hamaoka nuclear plant, the company said in a notice on the ruling.

What the court decided

The case began on 1 July 2011, when 34 individuals living in Shizuoka city and elsewhere in Shizuoka Prefecture sued the utility. They asked the court to order an end to operations at the three units, among other demands. The ruling came more than 15 years after the suit was filed. The court rejected the plaintiffs' claims in the judgment handed down that day.

What it does and does not settle

Chubu Electric's notice is a short disclosure, not the judgment itself. It gives no reasoning from the court and does not say whether the plaintiffs will appeal.

The ruling is a result in a civil suit. The notice does not say it affects any nuclear regulatory approval or restart authorization for Hamaoka, and it should not be read that way.

Earnings and next disclosure

The company said the ruling has no effect on its business results. It added that it will report promptly if anything further requires disclosure.
