SoftBank Group has paid the last instalment of its $30bn additional investment in OpenAI. The final tranche, $10bn (¥1.5796tn at the issuer's rate of ¥157.96 per dollar), went in on October 1, Japan time, through SoftBank Vision Fund 2, according to a company notice dated the same day.
What the money bought
The notice says the payment completes the $30bn commitment first announced on March 2, 2026 to OpenAI Group PBC. SoftBank's cumulative investment in OpenAI is now $64.6bn and its stake about 13%. The $64.6bn is the running total across all of its OpenAI holdings, not the size of the latest commitment.
The notice lists SoftBank's earlier disclosures on the first tranche (April 1) and the second (July 1). It does not give the size of those tranches, so this one is the only payment whose amount the notice states.
How it was funded
SoftBank said the third tranche was paid from proceeds of the foreign-currency senior bonds it announced on September 24. Tokyo Brief's earlier article covered the pricing of those bonds. The new notice adds that the bond money has now gone to OpenAI.
The bridge facility
The other change is on the lending side. SoftBank signed a bridge facility with total borrowing capacity of $40bn on March 27, 2026. The remaining $10bn of borrowing capacity was cancelled on September 30. Together with the early repayment announced on September 9, SoftBank said the facility is fully repaid.
The distinction matters. The last $10bn was cancelled rather than repaid. The notice does not give the rate or maturity of the bridge loan, and it does not give the terms of the bonds.
