Japan's Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) took action against Sapporo Breweries and the beer units of Kirin Holdings and Asahi Group Holdings, according to disclosures dated October 7, 2026. Sapporo and Kirin said the inspection and the search took place that day; Asahi's notice gives no date for its investigation. Only Sapporo's notice describes the suspected conduct. All three say they cannot yet say what it means for earnings.
What Sapporo says
Sapporo Breweries said it received an on-site inspection from the JFTC that day over a suspected violation of the Antimonopoly Act, Japan's competition law. It described the suspicion as an unreasonable restraint of trade on the selling prices of alcohol, carried out by four major alcohol makers.
Sapporo's notice does not name the other three makers. It says the company takes the inspection seriously and will cooperate fully with the JFTC.
Kirin and Asahi
Kirin Holdings disclosed that its subsidiary Kirin Brewery was searched by the JFTC that day over a suspected Antimonopoly Act violation. The parent said it takes the search seriously and will cooperate fully with the commission's investigation and requests.
Asahi Group Holdings said its subsidiary Asahi Breweries received a compulsory investigation from the JFTC over a suspected violation of the same law, and that it will cooperate fully. The notice does not say when the investigation took place.
Kirin's and Asahi's notices do not describe the suspected conduct. The three issuers used different words for what happened, and the table keeps the wording as each gave it.
| Disclosing company | Unit named | Action described | Suspected conduct stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sapporo Breweries | Sapporo Breweries | On-site inspection | Unreasonable restraint of trade on alcohol selling prices by four major makers |
| Kirin Holdings | Kirin Brewery (subsidiary) | Search | Suspected Antimonopoly Act violation, no detail given |
| Asahi Group Holdings | Asahi Breweries (subsidiary) | Compulsory investigation | Suspected Antimonopoly Act violation, no detail given |
What is and is not established
The disclosures confirm that the JFTC acted against the three companies' beer units and that the suspicion is of an Antimonopoly Act violation. They do not confirm that any violation occurred. Sapporo's description of the conduct is the company's own account of the suspicion, not a finding.
Each company says the effect on earnings is unknown at this point and that it will promptly announce matters requiring disclosure if they arise. None gives a financial figure, and none says what the commission seized or examined.
The next disclosures to watch are further company notices on the investigation and any announcement from the JFTC itself. Kirin's and Asahi's notices do not link their units to Sapporo's reference to four major makers.
