Tokio Marine Hits the Yen Ceiling on Its March Buyback, With a Second Pot Still Untouched

Tokio Marine Holdings spent ¥90.8bn on its own shares in July, filling out the yen cap of a March buyback program while a separate ¥200bn authorization from May has yet to see a single purchase.

Tokio Marine Holdings bought back 11,675,700 of its own shares for ¥90.8bn in July, according to a share buyback status report filed with Japan's Financial Services Agency. That single month of purchases pushed the insurer's cumulative spending under a March 23 board resolution to ¥287,399,432,800, or effectively 100.00% of the ¥287.4bn monetary cap the board set for that program back in March.

The money ran out before the share count did. Tokio Marine has bought 38,625,800 shares against the 48,207,200-share ceiling attached to the same resolution, putting the count-based progress at 80.12%. Shares got pricier as the buying continued: daily purchases in July ranged from roughly 294,500 to 651,900 shares, at average prices that climbed from around ¥7,199 early in the month toward ¥8,375 by month's end, explaining why the yen limit bound before the share limit did.

A second authorization, approved by the board on May 20 and covering purchases from May 21 through December 23, permits up to 130,000,000 shares or ¥200bn. It saw zero activity in July. Tokio Marine has not yet touched that pool, leaving the bulk of its announced capital return for the rest of the year still to come.

As of July 31, Tokio Marine held 44,338,385 treasury shares against 1,934,000,000 shares outstanding. The March program's completion is a monetary-cap milestone, not a full retirement of the authorized share count, and the filing gives no indication of when or how quickly the May program will start drawing down.
