K Line sets ¥700bn–800bn shareholder-return plan and 15% ROE goal for 2031

Kawasaki Kisen's five-year plan splits ¥700bn to ¥800bn in shareholder returns between a ¥120-a-share dividend worth ¥350bn and a flexible ¥350bn to ¥450bn, alongside a company-wide ROE target of 15% or more for 2031.

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, known as K Line, has put numbers on its next five years. Its medium-term management plan for the fiscal years 2027 to 2031 plans ¥700bn to ¥800bn in shareholder returns, and sets a return-on-equity goal of 15% or more. The company announced the plan on 4 November 2026 in a newsletter that also covered an AI and digital strategy and a revised environmental vision.

The return envelope

The cumulative shareholder-return line has two parts. The first is a dividend of ¥120 per share, which the company puts at the equivalent of ¥350bn. The second is what it calls flexible returns of ¥350bn to ¥450bn, to be paid as dividends or share buybacks, at the company's choice.

The split matters for anyone reading the headline range as a promise. These are plan-period figures, not realised returns, and only the per-share dividend is stated as a fixed rate. The size of the flexible portion, and its form, are left open by the company.

Cash sources and uses

The plan sets out cumulative cash flows over the plan period. Operating cash flow is projected at ¥1,000bn to ¥1,100bn, and financing cash flow is listed at ¥600bn. Net investment cash flow is ¥900bn, made up of ¥200bn in and ¥1,100bn out. The newsletter does not state a direction for the financing line, so readers should check the underlying plan before treating it as an inflow or outflow.

Targets for 2031

The company lists four key performance indicators for the fiscal year 2031. Company-wide ROE is to reach 15% or more, and company-wide ROIC 7.5% or more. The equity ratio is to sit at about 40% to 50% for the company as a whole. Net profit from its own-operated businesses is targeted at ¥120bn plus an unspecified amount.

The ROE goal and the profit goal cover different perimeters: ROE is a company-wide measure, while the ¥120bn figure applies only to own-operated businesses. The newsletter frames the ROE figure as a goal for the future, and says profit growth and better capital efficiency are to be pursued together.

Strategy and the other two documents

The plan's theme is "Shipping Redefined". K Line says it will use its field-based "integrated operating capability" to extend from ocean transport into offshore and marine, logistics and energy supply chain businesses, while keeping its finances sound.

The AI and digital strategy follows a DX strategy set in December 2021 and defines priority issues for the plan period. The environmental vision, revised for the third time since 2021, aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2050. It sets an interim goal for 2035 of improving CO2 emission efficiency by 40% from 2024.
