Boston Asset Manager GMO Crosses 5% Threshold in Musashi Seimitsu

Grantham, Mayo, Van Otterloo funded its entire ¥9.94bn Musashi Seimitsu stake with client and fund money, not its own capital, after a summer buying streak pushed it past Japan's 5% disclosure line.

Grantham, Mayo, Van Otterloo & Co. LLC (GMO), the Boston-based asset manager founded in 1996, has crossed Japan's 5% disclosure threshold in Musashi Seimitsu Industry, the auto-parts maker listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under ticker 7220. A large shareholding report filed with the Kanto Local Finance Bureau on August 12, 2026 shows GMO held 3,357,000 Musashi Seimitsu shares as of August 4, equal to 5.12% of the company's 65,581,861 shares outstanding.

The stake did not build in one move. GMO's disclosed trading log for the 60 days to August 4 opens with a sell-off: 18,900 shares on June 8, 89,600 on June 9 and 28,500 on June 10, all on-market, followed by a small buy of 16,600 shares on June 30 and another sale of 20,000 shares on July 8. From July 21 the fund turned into a sustained buyer, picking up 175,300 shares that day, 526,800 on July 28 (its largest single-day purchase in the disclosed window), 234,600 on July 29, 136,400 on July 31, 109,200 on August 3 and 171,400 on August 4.

None of the ¥9.94bn used to fund the position came from GMO's own balance sheet or from borrowed money. The filing records ¥0 in own funds and ¥0 in borrowings against a total acquisition cost of ¥9.94bn, all sourced from money held under GMO's investment-advisory contracts and its role as managing partner of multiple funds.

GMO lists its holding purpose as "pure investment," the standard box for most institutional filers, but adds that it "may take important proposal actions depending on circumstances." The filing gives no further detail on what those circumstances could be, and GMO filed alone, naming no joint holders.

For now the filing itself is the fact: a large US institutional manager has quietly built a stake just above Japan's mandatory disclosure line in an auto-parts supplier, funded entirely through pooled fund and client capital rather than house money or leverage. Whether "important proposal actions" becomes more than boilerplate is not something this disclosure addresses.
