Furukawa Electric Puts ¥100bn Behind a Bet on AI-Driven Fiber Demand

Furukawa Electric will spend roughly ¥100bn in the US, Brazil, Japan and India to nearly double its rollable ribbon-cable capacity for hyperscale data centers, with customer purchase commitments already in hand but revenue and profit impact not showing up until production ramps from late 2028.

Furukawa Electric has decided to spend roughly ¥100bn on new production equipment, land and buildings for optical fiber and its rollable ribbon cable, a filing to Japan's TDnet disclosure system on August 4 shows. The goal is concrete: push rollable ribbon-cable manufacturing capacity, measured in fiber volume, to roughly double current levels by the close of the fiscal year ending March 2026.

The company's stated logic is demand, not diversification for its own sake. Generative AI adoption and more sophisticated cloud services are driving strong, sustained growth in the global data center market, and hyperscale data center construction in particular is lifting demand for high-quality optical fiber cable over the medium to long term, Furukawa said. Its rollable ribbon cable, designed for higher-capacity optical transmission, already has a healthy order book and is expected to keep growing. Before committing the capital, Furukawa said it confirmed purchase commitments from customers, including some long-term commitments, though the filing does not describe these as signed supply contracts or spell out volumes or counterparties.

The money is split across four countries. In the United States, the work runs through Lightera LLC; in Brazil, through Lightera LatAm S.A. Furukawa also named a Japan-based production subsidiary, though the filing gives that entity's name only in Japanese script, without an English rendering. The fourth site is in India, where investment runs through Birla Furukawa Fibre Optics Private Limited (BFFO), a joint venture with Universal Cables Limited in which Furukawa holds an equity-method stake. Furukawa was explicit that the India piece is not yet locked in: the BFFO investment becomes final only once Furukawa and Universal Cables Limited reach agreement on terms.

None of this shows up quickly in Furukawa's numbers. Mass production is set to start sequentially from the second half of the fiscal year that begins in April 2028, site by site rather than all at once. Furukawa said the investment's effect on consolidated results for the fiscal year ending March 2027 will be minor, and that it expects the capacity addition to start contributing to consolidated revenue only once production ramps up at each site from the second half of fiscal 2028 onward. For a company betting on the durability of the AI infrastructure build-out, the payoff is deliberately a multi-year story, not a near-term one.
