Japan's securities filings run through EDINET, the disclosure system that requires companies to tag their reports in XBRL so regulators and investors can pull out figures by machine rather than by eye. On September 11 the Financial Services Agency published its draft annual update to the underlying taxonomy, and this year's version does more than routine housekeeping: it creates a standalone "sustainability-related taxonomy" for the disclosures companies must start filing under Japan's new Sustainability Disclosure Standards.
The standards themselves were published in March 2025 and revised in March 2026, and until now there was no dedicated tagging framework for them.
Rather than build one from scratch, the FSA imported elements from the IFRS Foundation's IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Taxonomy 2024, the same base the International Sustainability Standards Board uses internationally, so Japanese filings on governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics and targets should map more directly onto the global categories.
The new tags do not apply immediately. They are phased in by filing type, as set out below.
| Filing | Applies from |
|---|---|
| Securities reports | Fiscal years or specified periods ending on or after March 31, 2027 |
| Semi-annual reports | Fiscal years or specified periods beginning on or after April 1, 2027 |
| Securities registration statements | Filings whose most recent fiscal year or specified period ends on or after March 31, 2027 |
| Shelf registration statements and supplements | Filed on or after April 1, 2027 |
For a company with a March fiscal year-end, the annual securities report covering the year to March 2027 would be the first required to carry the new sustainability tags.
The same release bundles in broader annual maintenance: updates tied to disclosure ordinance amendments from February and April 2026, revisions to the consolidated financial statement rules, accounting-rule changes for investment trusts, special purpose companies, banks, insurers, telecom operators and electric utilities, and new tagging to support IFRS 18, the accounting standard on financial statement presentation and disclosure.
None of this is final. The FSA is taking comments on the draft until 5pm on October 13, 2026, with a finished taxonomy expected in early December and the system going live at the end of that month. That leaves compliance teams, auditors and the vendors who build Japan's XBRL filing software roughly three months to test the sustainability taxonomy before it becomes required groundwork for future filings.
