Quantum Solutions Unwinds $8.3mn GPU Deal After Supplier Warns of 36-Week Delay

Quantum Solutions canceled its first AI data-center hardware contract days after paying $8.3 million upfront, after the supplier said supply constraints would push delivery out to about 36 weeks, and the refund is still working its way back to the company's account.

Quantum Solutions Co., Ltd. (TSE Standard: 2338) told investors on September 18 that it has unwound the first equipment contract behind its planned AI data-center (AIDC) business, just eleven days after signing it and eight days after wiring the initial payment.

The Tokyo-listed company signed a sales contract on September 7 for GPU servers and related equipment, described as its first investment toward a "latest-generation, high-density" GPU computing platform, and paid an initial installment of $8.3mn to the supplier on September 10. At the time of that payment, Quantum Solutions says it had received no indication that supply conditions were shifting.

That changed on September 15. The supplier, an AI-infrastructure sales, integration and support business based in the Kanto region, told Quantum Solutions that reduced allocations from its own source of supply meant delivery times would stretch to roughly 36 weeks, and that the full ordered volume might not arrive on the original terms or schedule. Partial supply might still be possible, but neither the exact quantity nor a firm delivery date was fixed at that point, and the price of the GPU servers themselves remained subject to change because of shifting memory and other component costs.

Quantum Solutions and the supplier spent September 15 to 17 negotiating revised quantities, timing and other terms. With none of those figures settled and price still moving, the company judged it unwise to leave $8.3mn sitting with the supplier. The two sides reached a working agreement to cancel the contract and return the money in full, though the supplier still needed internal sign-off; that came through on September 18, finalizing the termination and the refund. As of the disclosure, the money has not yet reached Quantum Solutions' account: the company expects the $8.3mn back by September 25.

Quantum Solutions says its push into the AIDC business and GPU computing infrastructure is unchanged, and it has not ruled out returning to the same supplier if better terms emerge. Its board has directed management to solicit quantities, delivery dates, product mix and pricing from multiple supply candidates, including the one it just parted ways with, before committing new prepayments.

The episode has put the company's original plan to deliver and install the equipment at an Osaka data center around November 2026 under review; Quantum Solutions is still assessing what, if any, effect the episode will have on consolidated results for the fiscal year ending in February 2027.
