Kansai Electric Power said on September 1 that Mihama Power Station Unit 3, a pressurized water reactor rated at 826,000 kilowatts of electrical output and 2.44 million kilowatts of thermal output, is scheduled to reconnect to the grid on September 15.
The unit has been offline since May 8, when the company confirmed a steam leak from the reactor's high-pressure turbine and manually shut the reactor down. Kansai Electric opened its 29th periodic inspection of the unit on June 16 and says the work has proceeded on schedule since.
On the cause of the leak, the company says an investigation led it to replace the turbine's upper casing closure cap, the component sealing the high-pressure turbine housing. Kansai Electric also says it has established new guidelines and reconfirmed that maintenance has been properly carried out across every piece of equipment at the unit that carries high-temperature, high-pressure steam or water, not just the turbine that leaked.
The company frames September 15 as a plan, not a completed restart: it says it will now proceed with reactor startup preparations ahead of that date, repeating that safety takes priority in how the periodic inspection is closed out. Kansai Electric disclosed the original shutdown separately on May 8; Tuesday's filing sets out the plan to reconnect on September 15.
