Hakuhodo DY's Growth Number Leans Heavily on Digital Holdings, Not the Ad Business

Digital Holdings supplied about 5 of the 7.5% sales growth Hakuhodo DY reported for the quarter, leaving organic growth under 3%, while management said AI is already shortening how long North American clients need consulting help.

Hakuhodo DY Holdings told investors at its August 5 earnings briefing that first-quarter sales rose about 7.5% year-on-year, but roughly 5 percentage points of that gain came from its Digital Holdings acquisition rather than underlying demand. Strip out Digital Holdings, foreign-exchange effects and BPO income, and organic sales growth was just under 3%, with organic gross profit growth just under 4%.

In a separate answer, management described its Q1-end organic growth rate as mid-single-digit and "as expected", versus an internet market it forecasts to grow 6-8% this year, and repeated a full-year target of double-digit organic growth.

Overseas operations dragged on both revenue and profit. China, Thailand and North America, particularly the group's consulting units, were the main causes, while Taiwan, Vietnam and Indonesia performed well. In China, client ad placements fell in January and February amid strained Japan-China relations but have recovered since April, with profit expected to improve as an earlier restructuring takes hold. Thailand is contending with a weak economy tied to high oil prices plus the Middle East situation, and management expects difficult conditions to persist.

In North America, management pointed to a specific mechanism: the spread of AI is shortening how long clients need consulting engagements. The IDEO design unit is recovering by adapting to that shift, but SYP remains in structural transition and has also been hit through its Middle East base, with difficulty expected to continue into the next quarter. Management said it cannot completely rule out an eventual impairment on overseas assets following a large restructuring two years ago, though it said nothing has been decided. The Q&A was held August 5 and released to the market on September 15.
