Sony's Buyback Clears Nearly Half Its ¥500bn Ceiling

Sony Group spent ¥43.48bn repurchasing shares in August, bringing its ¥500bn buyback authorization to 47.47% completion by value and 29.38% by share count, with the program running through May 2027 and more than half the authorized spending still available.

Sony Group bought back 11,613,200 of its own shares for ¥43.48bn in August 2026, according to a monthly buyback status report filed with the Kanto Local Finance Bureau. The purchases ran through market transactions on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under a discretionary trading contract, with daily volumes ranging from roughly 198,000 shares on August 21 to just over 1.9mn shares on August 3.

The purchases sit inside a program Sony's board authorized on May 8, 2026: up to 230,000,000 shares and up to ¥500bn, running from May 11, 2026 to May 10, 2027. Cumulative repurchases under that authorization reached 67,581,300 shares for ¥237.35bn by the end of August, equal to 29.38% of the share ceiling and 47.47% of the value ceiling. More than half of the authorized yen amount remains unspent with roughly nine months left on the clock.

Separately, Sony processed 3,140,694 treasury shares out of its holdings in August, with a combined book value of ¥10.31bn. That is not new buying: 1,999,500 of those shares went out through stock-option exercises and 1,141,194 were delivered under the company's restricted stock unit system, both compensation-related dispositions rather than repurchases. After netting the month's purchases and dispositions, Sony held 119,983,217 treasury shares against 5,965,316,326 shares issued as of August 31. The filing carries no comment on Sony's share price.
