Nonresident investors bought a net ¥42.5bn of Japanese securities in the week of October 18 to 24, reversing the previous week's net selling, according to the Ministry of Finance's weekly international transactions in securities table, released on October 29, 2026.
Equities up, short-term debt down
The small total conceals large offsetting moves. Nonresidents were net buyers of equity and investment fund shares to the tune of ¥1.18tn, and net buyers of long-term debt by ¥43.3bn. They were net sellers of short-term debt by ¥1.18tn.
The ministry's table presents these as net acquisition (plus) and net disposition (minus) by category, and notes that totals may not add because of rounding. The table does not say which investors or countries sit behind the equity purchases or the short-term debt sales.
The previous week, revised
The table marks nonresident flows for the week of October 11 to 17 as revised. It now shows a net disposition of ¥849.8bn for that week. (Earlier Tokyo Brief coverage)
Residents buy abroad again
On the other side of the ledger, Japanese residents were net buyers of foreign securities by ¥430.8bn in the week to October 24. That follows a revised net disposition of ¥169.2bn in the week to October 17.
The latest week's resident purchases break down into a net ¥288.1bn of equity and investment fund shares and a net ¥235.3bn of short-term debt, partly offset by net sales of ¥92.6bn in long-term debt.

What the data cover
The weekly series is based on reports from designated major investors: banks, financial instruments firms, insurers, investment trust management companies and asset managers designated by the finance minister under Article 21 of the ministerial ordinance on foreign exchange transaction reports. Classification follows the residence of the securities' issuer, not the currency of denomination. Figures marked with an asterisk are revised.
The one-week swing is narrow in total and wide in composition, so the equity and short-term debt lines carry more information than the headline ¥42.5bn.
