SoftBank Group to Repay $25.9bn OpenAI Bridge Loan Early

SoftBank Group will wipe out the full $25.9bn balance on its OpenAI bridge loan on September 15, retiring debt it drew under a $40bn facility signed less than six months earlier, though the filing does not say where the repayment funds are coming from.

SoftBank Group Corp. told the Tokyo Stock Exchange on September 9, 2026 that it will repay in full, on September 15, the $25.9bn outstanding on the bridge loan it used to help fund its additional investment in OpenAI. Converted at ¥153.74 to the dollar, the company put the amount at roughly ¥3.98tn.

The facility itself dates to March 27, 2026, when SoftBank Group signed an agreement giving it a $40bn total borrowing limit specifically to cover the OpenAI additional stake. The company originally drew $30bn against that limit. By September 9, the outstanding balance had already fallen to $25.9bn, before this week's full clearance, though the notice does not explain how or when that roughly $4.1bn reduction occurred.

This week's disclosure closes out a chain of five related filings. The sequence began March 2 with the announcement of the OpenAI additional investment itself, continued with the bridge-facility signing on March 27, and tracked disbursement through two tranches: the first executed April 1 and the second on July 1. The notice identifies Chairman and President & CEO Masayoshi Son as SoftBank Group's representative director.

The filing does not identify the source of the funds used for repayment, and it does not explain the earlier drop in the loan balance from $30bn to $25.9bn ahead of the September 15 repayment. Those gaps leave open exactly how SoftBank Group is managing the broader financing behind its OpenAI commitment.
