SMC Corporation, the Tokyo-listed maker of pneumatic and factory-automation equipment, has already spent 94.6% of the ¥50bn its board set aside for share buybacks, according to a monthly status report the company filed with the Kanto Local Finance Bureau on September 4, 2026 under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. The pace is notable because the authorization has roughly seven months left to run.

The board approved the program on May 14, 2026, capping repurchases at 800,000 common shares and ¥50bn, with the buying window open from May 20, 2026 to March 24, 2027. By the end of August, SMC had bought back 681,100 shares for a cumulative ¥47.31bn, equal to 85.1% of the share-count cap and 94.6% of the yen cap.

August alone accounted for 192,600 shares and ¥14.0bn of that total, spread across nineteen trading days. The heaviest single day was August 19, when SMC bought 30,000 shares for roughly ¥2.14bn, more than triple the size of most other sessions that month.

As of August 31, SMC held 1,380,370 treasury shares against 63,869,359 shares outstanding. The filing reports no treasury-share dispositions during the period and no repurchases made under a shareholders'-meeting resolution, meaning the entire program runs through the board's own authority.

The report is a routine monthly disclosure required under Article 24-6(1) of the FIEA rather than a strategy statement, so it does not say whether SMC intends to seek a fresh authorization once the current ¥50bn budget is used up, or whether the pace seen in August will continue into the program's final months.
