Sanko Gosei buys Alabama molder to get a foothold in the US South

Sanko Gosei, the Tokyo-listed maker of plastic molded parts, is adding a plant in Alabama to a North American footprint that has so far stretched from Indiana to Mexico. Its wholly owned subsidiary Sanko Gosei Technologies USA signed agreements on October 21 (local time) to take over the precision plastic injection-molding business of Cumberland Plastic Systems, LLC, in Opelika, Alabama, along with the related real estate, the company said in a timely disclosure dated October 23.

What is being bought

The target makes and sells precision plastic injection-molded products, including for automotive parts. Sanko Gosei says it also has a customer base outside autos, including power-tool makers.

For the year to December 2025, the acquired business posted sales of $48.418mn (about ¥7.58bn at the company's conversion rate of ¥156.54 to the dollar) and operating profit of $1.375mn (about ¥215mn). Cumberland Plastic Systems, LLC reported net assets of $5.857mn and total assets of $34.955mn at the end of 2025.

The price is not public. Sanko Gosei says a confidentiality agreement with the seller bars disclosure, and that it set the price after considering third-party market valuations of the real estate and machinery and an estimate of future earning power. The target's sales and profit are not the purchase price.

Why Sanko Gosei says it is doing this

The company's stated reasoning is that US automakers' demand for locally sourced parts has risen, with trade policy among the backdrops, even as electrification demand shifts. It also expects parts demand to grow, including for hybrid vehicles. These are Sanko Gosei's own explanations.

It has been expanding its existing Indiana plant, and had been studying a new or acquired site in the southern US to improve access to the automotive supply chain there and to handle future orders. The deal gives it a new production base and customer base in the South, which it expects to complement Indiana in capacity and supply.

Timing and earnings

Closing, which is the date of the business transfer, is scheduled for November 2 local time. The same day is the start of operations at the subsidiary's Alabama plant. The deal has not yet closed.

Sanko Gosei says the effect on consolidated results for the year ending May 2027 is minor. The notice states no relationship between Sanko Gosei and the target in capital, personnel or business dealings. The target is owned through two family gift trusts at 49% each and by two individuals at 1% each.

The buyer, Sanko Gosei Technologies USA, based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, was set up in December 2012 and is fully owned by Sanko Gosei. At the end of May 2026 it had capital of $31mn and total assets of $91.797mn.
