Japan's August Trade Deficit Widens to ¥1.11tn Despite Record Exports

Japan's preliminary August trade data show both exports and imports at record highs for the month, but imports grew faster, widening the trade deficit to ¥1.11tn and cutting the surplus with the United States by 77.6% as imports from the US jumped 55.2%.

Japan's customs data for August show near-record trade flows that still didn't balance. Exports rose 19.3% year-on-year to ¥10.05tn, the strongest August on record, while imports jumped 28.0% to ¥11.15tn, also an August high. The gap between them produced a trade deficit of ¥1.11tn, up 275.9% from a year earlier and the fourth straight month in deficit, according to the Ministry of Finance's preliminary release.

Semiconductor and electronic components and automobiles led the export gain; on the import side, crude oil and semiconductor components did the heavy lifting, alongside computers and liquefied natural gas. Quantity indices confirm the move isn't purely a yen story: export volumes rose 2.5% and import volumes rose 2.7% year-on-year. The average customs exchange rate for August was ¥160.64 to the dollar, 8.7% weaker than the ¥147.73 rate a year earlier; the ministry's release does not draw a causal line from that rate to the wider deficit.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, which strips out calendar effects, exports were ¥10.89tn and imports ¥11.73tn, leaving a seasonally adjusted deficit of ¥840.6bn, up 23.4% from July. That suggests the shortfall isn't purely an August quirk tied to one-off shipment timing.

RegionExports (Aug)Imports (Aug)BalanceYoY change in balance
World¥10.05tn¥11.15tn-¥1.11tn+275.9%

European Union¥866.3bn¥1.10tn-¥230.5bn+76.7%
Asia¥5.75tn¥5.42tn+¥330.1bn-38.3%

Japan's surplus with the United States collapsed 77.6% to ¥70.4bn as imports from the US jumped 55.2%, the 13th consecutive month of import growth, even as exports to the US also rose 24.9%. That leaves Tokyo with one of its thinnest monthly US surpluses in recent memory.

The deficit with China widened 29.4% to ¥551.6bn, extending a streak now running 65 consecutive months. The EU deficit grew 76.7% to ¥230.5bn, its fourth straight monthly shortfall. Only Asia as a bloc kept Japan in the black, though that surplus narrowed 38.3% to ¥330.1bn as imports from the region grew faster than exports.

All figures above are preliminary, as marked in the ministry's release. The release attributes the export and import moves to specific product categories, not to currency, tariff, or commodity-price causes, so readers should treat any broader explanation as unconfirmed unless the ministry provides further commentary.
