Chiba Kogyo Bank's held-to-maturity bonds carry ¥19.7bn in unrealized losses, guidance unchanged

Chiba Kogyo Bank reported gross unrealized losses of ¥19.685bn on its held-to-maturity bonds at end-September, ¥19.683bn net of gains, while gains on other securities outweighed them and its earnings and dividend forecasts for the year to March 2027 stay unchanged.

The Chiba Kogyo Bank (TSE: 8337) said its held-to-maturity bonds carried total unrealized losses of ¥19.685bn at the end of its second quarter on September 30, according to a timely disclosure dated October 30.

What the number covers

The figure applies to the bank and its consolidated subsidiaries and includes every held-to-maturity bond whose market value can be reasonably calculated. The bonds have a book value of ¥110.865bn and a market value of ¥91.179bn.

The bank also gave the gains side. Unrealized gains on the same bonds were ¥2mn, leaving net unrealized losses of ¥19.683bn. The gross and net figures are separate lines in the disclosure.

The comparison and the offset

The bank set the ¥19.685bn against last year's earnings: it equals 154.8% of consolidated ordinary profit of ¥12.711bn and 228.5% of profit attributable to owners of the parent of ¥8.612bn, both for the year to March 2026. These are the bank's own yardsticks for scale, not a measure of capital adequacy.

Other securities held for purposes other than maturity showed a valuation gain of ¥21.492bn. Combined with the net held-to-maturity figure, total securities valuation gains came to ¥1.809bn, so the other holdings more than covered the held-to-maturity shortfall.

Guidance

The bank said the matter does not affect its earnings forecast or dividend forecast for the year to March 2027. It added that the forecasts rest on information available on the release date and that actual results may differ. The disclosure describes unrealized losses, and it does not report a realized loss or any capital deduction.
