Oncolys Starts Selling Esophageal Cancer Virus Therapy in Japan

Oncolys BioPharma began commercial sales of its OBP-301 oncolytic virus therapy on August 21, about two and a half months after Japan's health ministry approved it for esophageal cancer patients who cannot have curative surgery or chemoradiotherapy, with Fujifilm Toyama Chemical distributing it to hospitals.

Oncolys BioPharma began selling its oncolytic virus therapy for esophageal cancer, developed under code OBP-301, on August 21, 2026, following approval from Japan's health ministry on June 8. The product moves from the company's regulatory file into hospital pharmacies roughly two and a half months after that approval.

The approval covers only esophageal cancer patients who cannot undergo curative surgery or chemoradiotherapy, a narrower group than the wider esophageal cancer population. Oncolys says patients and referring doctors should contact individual medical institutions directly to find out whether that hospital has adopted the treatment.

Fujifilm Toyama Chemical will distribute the drug, supplying pharmaceutical wholesalers who in turn deliver it to hospitals that have completed the paperwork required to handle it. Oncolys, founded in 2004, built the therapy on research originally developed by a former Okayama University professor.

The notice does not disclose a price, expected patient volumes, or the drug's reimbursement status under Japan's national health insurance system.
